Poem: Lost in fur and ferns
Lost in fur and ferns
Even living as we do in the future,
like monarchs, off the land but far from it,
surrounded by electronic servants
who whisk drudgery out of our sight,
divert us, accept our petulant kicks,
even though we are fed, sheltered
and robed in artifice,
bodies scrubbed, hair snipped, sweat
and all odors of the forest suppressed,
still we are creatures of skin and fur,
straining against the filthy
arms that hold us
until the day we stop
struggling and sink
into our mother's breast.
Poem: Spring afternoon
Spring afternoon
On the walk
outside the bar,
beside the round
smokers' tables
where a beer-bellied
man panting by stops
to offer a light
to the young redhead
in the tight shirt,
atop the cement
block at the end
of a parking slot,
one sparrow
mounts another.
